Lost or Stolen ATM/Debit Cards

If your ATM or Debit card is lost or stolen, you should take steps to protect yourself from theft as soon as possible.

The first step is to notify the issuer of your card immediately once you notice your card is gone.

For CFCU ATM or Debit cards, give us a call at800-232-8101 and select option 2 so your account can be blocked and a new card issued. If you are outside the U.S., call 212-444-0986.

If you report an ATM or Debit card missing before someone uses it, Federal Law says you are not responsible for any unauthorized transactions. If someone uses your ATM or Debit card before you report it lost or stolen, however, you may be liable depending on how quickly you report it:

If you report:

Your maximum loss:

Before any unauthorized charges are made

$0

Within two business days after you learn about the loss or theft

$50

More than two business days after you learn about the loss or theft, but less than 60 calendar days after your statement is sent to you

$500

More than 60 calendar days after your statement is sent to you

All of the money in your account and possibly linked accounts

If someone makes unauthorized transactions with your Debit card number, but your card is not lost, you are not liable for those transactions if you report them within 60 days of your statement being sent to you.

Follow Up

After you have called to report your card lost or stolen, the Federal Trade Commission recommends that you follow up with a letter or email confirming that you reported the problem. Include your account number, the date and time when you noticed your card was missing, and when you first reported the loss. Keep a copy for your records, and consider using certified mail for paper letters.

Important: If you send a follow up to CFCU via email, please use our Secure Email feature within PC Access so your information is encrypted. This will also give you a record of when your email was sent.

If you have any questions about ATM or Debit cards, please stop by your local branch or give us a call at 510-627-5000 or 800-232-8101.
